WEEK #2: ARRI PRODUCTION LIGHTING
TOPIC SYNOPSIS -
Arri lights are commonly used on many film and video productions. These kits are available for checkout and we will cover the basics of safety, preparation, setup, and practical uses. These lights are essentials to production lighting and can also give you a creative edge when trying to execute a particular look. We will also look into other elements such as Gels, Scrims, Flags, Dimmers, and Diffusion. Each light in this course has a particular and practical purpose and usage. We will provide examples of common lighting setups and how to operate these lights. This being an experimental course we will discuss how you can manipulate all these areas to deliver a desired outcome which you are looking for. There will be resource videos provided, which you will be required to watch; along with reading regarding each topic, which in this case will be Arri lights.
After a well-rounded understanding of these Arri kits is known through the class’s videos, readings, and interactive tutorials, we will conduct a comparison assignment with lights to create a similar look. There will be no limitations to what lights you implement and other elements utilized, such as gels, diffusion, and other light manipulation.
- ARRI Fresnel Light Kit -
The Fresnel lights are warm (hot) tungsten light. Currently available are Arri 5 head Fresnel which contains two 650w lights, one 300w light, and two 150w’s (Inky). Each of these lights has a different amount of wattage and will provide different looks. On the back of each light is a knob that allows you to control the light beam and its spread. Flood Beam is when the light’s bulb (globe) is positioned to the very back of the light allowing the light to spread across a larger area. DO NOT EVER TOUCH GLOBE WITH BARE HANDS. Spot Beam is where the bulb (globe) is closer to the lens giving a shorter range of spread. The lens is used to focus the light and allows you to give an even spread.

- ARRI 1K Light Kit -
The Arri 1k Light Kit comes with 4 1000w lights which are open face tungsten provides light beam angles of 65° in the Flood Position and 24° in the Spot Position. These lights are fairly powerful and can be used in many scenarios and in combination to portray sunlight and moonlight if you don’t have a high powered HMI light at your disposal. The rule applies the same here in regards to the globe and NOT TOUCHING IT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. These two lights in combination will provide a great setup for production on any set. These lights are fairly powerful and have a strong spread of area; meaning that any other sources of light that can represent the look and feel of these Arri light kits maybe challenging, however rewarding in a sense of creativity and troubleshooting on a shoot. There are many light sources one could use; it is important we understand how these lights work within the mise n scene and how we can adapt other light sources to provide a similar look.
Below you will find links to readings pertaining to the topic. There will be a quiz on the videos and the reading each week.
